In The Program Era, Mark McGurl offers a fundamental reinterpretation of postwar American fiction, asserting that it can be properly understood only in relation to the rise of mass higher education and the creative writing program. An engaging and stylishly written examination of an era we thought we knew, The Program Era will be at the center of debates about postwar literature and culture for years to come.

I'll give the book 3 stars for the immense job of literary scholarship it represents, However, it's also a prime example of literary over-bakedness full of academic jargon and heady literary theory that obscures more than elucidates. Also the book fails miserably to tie in the glut of creative writing since the inception of these creative writing factories to the general expansion of the publishing industry just like the general expansion of everything consumable in American culture to the point that we are buried in creating more writers than we conceivably need while the number of people who actually read anything is diminishing more and more. So like everything else that's consumable in this glutted culture we have far too many writers writing far too many books and adding the self-publishing factor that's run riot we have everyone and their cousin writing books many, if not most of them, of little merit flooding book stores and online book sellers with a constantly erupting volcano of writers and writing no thanks to the creative writing industry created by the flood of MFA's every year and the self-serving institutions that get tuition money, the writers get jobs teaching more writers to write more stuff we don't need and the student's and teacher's are in collusion promoting each other. It's a self perpetuating industry like so much of what's produced in America for the sake of over-consumption and waste and Marketing is the devil in the machine.
